Privacy
What this site collects, what it does not, and who else sees your data.
Short version: there is no account to create and nothing about you is sold. What this site handles is limited to what any web server sees, aggregate page-view measurement, and the cookies set by advertising and affiliate systems. This page explains each of those, and how to turn the last two off.
What is collected automatically
When you load a page, the hosting and content-delivery provider that serves this site processes standard request information: the address requested, the page you arrived from, a browser identification string, an approximate location derived from the network address, and a timestamp. This is what any web server logs. It is used to deliver the page, keep the site running, and detect abuse.
We do not use it to build a profile of you, and we do not combine it with anything else.
Analytics
We measure traffic in aggregate to see which guides are being read. This measurement is cookieless, does not fingerprint your device, does not follow you to other websites, and is not shared with advertising networks. It tells us that a page was viewed, not who viewed it.
Advertising
This site is supported by advertising, including advertising served by Google. Ads are what keep the guides free to read, and they are separate from the editorial content: we do not choose individual ads, and advertisers have no say in what we write.
Third-party vendors, including Google
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and to other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
What those cookies are used for
They select which ads to show, limit how often you see the same ad, and measure whether an ad worked. To do that they may record an approximate location, a device or browser identifier, and the pages you have viewed. These cookies are set by Google and by other advertising vendors on their own domains, not by us.
How to opt out of personalised advertising

- aboutads.info — opt out of third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices.
- In the EU — youronlinechoices.eu covers the same ground for European users.
- Your browser — you can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. The site will still work; you may see less relevant ads.
Opting out of personalised advertising does not mean you stop seeing ads. It means the ads you see are no longer selected using your browsing history.
Where consent is required
In regions where the law requires your consent before advertising cookies are set — the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland — a consent prompt is shown first, and no advertising cookies are set until you have made a choice. You can change or withdraw that choice at any time by clearing this site's cookies in your browser and reloading the page.
Cookies
This site sets no tracking cookies of its own. Pages are served as plain documents, and there is no login, so there is no session to keep. Cookies you encounter here come from two places: the advertising systems described above, and the merchants and affiliate networks described below.
Affiliate links and third parties
Some outbound links on this site are affiliate links. When you click one, the merchant or the affiliate network records that the visit came from here, so that a resulting purchase can be credited to us. That is handled entirely on their systems.
What we never receive: your name, postal address, email address, payment details, or a record of what you individually bought. Commission reports reach us as totals.
What we cannot control: once you leave this site, the destination's own privacy policy and cookie practices apply. We have no visibility into them, and reading their policy is the only reliable way to know what they do.
How long anything is kept
Server request logs are kept for a short period for security and troubleshooting, then discarded. Aggregate analytics are retained as counts, not as records about individuals. Advertising data is held by the advertising vendors under their own retention policies, not by us.
If you write to us, we keep the message so that we can reply and so that we have a record of corrections. We do not add you to a mailing list, and we do not pass your address to anyone else.
What this site does not do
- No selling, renting or sharing of personal information.
- No user accounts, no logins, no newsletter sign-up wall.
- No collection of payment information — nothing is sold directly here.
- No behavioural profiling of our own, and no data-sharing with data brokers.
- No collection of information from anyone known to be under 13.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal data is held about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. In practice, the only personal data this site would hold about you is an email you chose to send us. Requests can go to the address on the contact page.
For data held by advertising vendors, opt-out and access requests go to those vendors directly — the links in the advertising section above are the fastest route.
Children
This site is written for adults making purchasing decisions. It is not directed at children, we do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and we do not knowingly serve personalised advertising to them.
Changes to this policy
If what the site collects changes — for example if a comment system or a newsletter is added, or an additional advertising partner is brought in — this page will be updated and the date below changed. The date is the reliable signal of what is current.
